Our cosmetic grade tallow begins with premium beef suet sourced from grass fed cattle. Suet is the firm fat found around the kidneys and loins, and is widely regarded as the cleanest and most stable fat for producing high-quality tallow.

To prepare it for cosmetic use, the suet undergoes a controlled rendering and refining process designed to produce a consistent, low-odour ingredient suitable for formulation.

Gentle Wet Rendering

The raw suet is first rendered using a wet rendering method, where the fat is gently heated in the presence of water. This approach allows the fat to separate from connective tissue and impurities at controlled temperatures.

Compared with traditional high-heat rendering used for cooking fats, this method helps produce a cleaner, more refined tallow with improved clarity and a softer aroma profile.

Filtration & Clarification

Once rendered, the tallow is carefully filtered to remove remaining proteins, membranes, and particulate matter. This purification step is essential for cosmetic applications, helping create a smoother ingredient that integrates more easily into formulations.

Low Moisture Finishing

Whipped Tallow Balm Formula

Ingredients (by weight)
74% Cosmetic Grade Tallow
24% Jojoba Oil (or your preferred liquid oil blend)
1% Natural Vitamin E
1% Essential Oil Blend (optional)

Method

Melt
In a double boiler, gently warm the tallow until just liquified, ideally between 40–45 °C. Keep the heat low and controlled.

Blend
Stir in your jojoba oil and Vitamin E until fully combined. Add essential oils if using and mix thoroughly.

Cool
Allow the mixture to rest at room temperature until it begins to thicken. You are looking for a soft, semi-set consistency, usually around 20–25 °C.

Whip
Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the mixture until pale, airy, and light in texture.

Jar
Spoon or pipe into clean jars while still soft for a smooth, professional finish.

Tips for Success

This gentle melt-and-whip method protects the structure of the tallow and carrier oils while creating a soft, cloud-like balm with excellent spreadability.

Prefer something firmer and more traditional? Skip the whipping stage and pour the liquid blend directly into jars to set into a dense, salve-style balm.
